Unit 5 sound production

What is a soundscape? task 1

A soundscape is a sound or combination that forms or arises from an immersive environment.

Identify the soundscapes task 2

audio clip 1

The soundscape from thus audio clip is a thunderstorm

rain

thunder

flow of water , could suggest your near a river or its flowing down the street.

Increase volume of the thunder to make the storm sound closer.

audio clip 2

From listening to the second audio clip it sounds like a medieval battlefield

people scream and grunting

chanting

swords clashing

shields being hit

as it is a medieval battle you could add the sounds of horses galloping and neighing.

Creating a soundscape task 3

steelwork- In this soundscape you can hear steelwork occurring in the background. to recreate this I could use a nail and tap it against a piece of glass.

  • pages turning
  • fire crackling
  • rain tapping on the window
  • writing on paper
  • books being stacked
For the first soundscape I found all of these sounds come together to make the noise of a busy New York city. If you were to remove or replace some of these sounds however, we would get something completely different. If we were to remove all the vehicular sounds and sirens and replaced them with cheery medieval music and kept in crowds walking and drunk people shouting we would get something that could resemble night life in a Medieval town. Or if we were to remove the people and keep in the sirens and add a faster car noise we could get something like a police chase.

In the second soundscape I have linked in this blog it creates the ambience of a library with books being stacked, pages turning, a fire crackling and rain tapping on the window. all of this comes together to create a relaxing atmosphere. Although, we could change that atmosphere by taking the fire crackling and put it over loud creaking noises to give off the impression a large building is on fire. Or maybe add rain tapping onto the window with sounds of inside a moving car. To give off the impression that its a soundscape of someone driving home on a rainy day. this would also give off a relaxing ambience and peaceful soundscape.

What is Foley?

Foley is a term used towards creating sounds for a movie with everyday items in a studio after a movie is finished being filmed.

In todays lesson, we were shown a YouTube video of behind the scenes of warner bros making Foley sounds for movies. After this, we were tasked to create a short podcast talking about Foley and what we think of it when it comes to movies.

What is a soundtrack/score?

In a film, a soundtrack is any song by any artist featured in a movie, maybe because the director likes that song or its fitting with the character or a certain scene. A score is a completely original piece of music made by composers for that movie and for specific scenes for a movie.

Task 1

Part 1

The first soundscape I chosen is a city soundscape (193) Open Window New York City Soundscape at Night (Midtown Manhattan City Sounds) 4k - YouTube

The second soundscape I chose was a rain and thunder soundscape from inside a building with a crackling fireplace (193) Rain & Thunderstorm Sounds | Crackling Fireplace | 3 hours - YouTube

part 2

The first soundscape I have chosen is a city soundscape from an apartment window. In this sound scape you can hear construction occurring in the distance. You can clearly hear crowds of people walking by the apartment window
